Does Paying Rent Build Your Credit?

July 14, 2026 · 4 min read

It's one of the most common questions renters ask — and the honest answer is: not automatically, but it can. Rent is usually the biggest payment in your budget, yet for most people it does nothing for their credit. Here's why, and how to change it.

The catch: most rent isn't reported

Your landlord's rent ledger doesn't reach the credit bureaus on its own. Unless someone is actively reporting your payments, years of on-time rent simply don't show up on your credit file. Just 13% of consumers currently have their rent reported (TransUnion, 2025), and only about 2.3% of U.S. renters have a rental tradeline on file at all (FICO). For most renters, the largest, most reliable payment they make every month is invisible to the people deciding whether to lend to them.

When it is reported, the impact is real

Reporting changes the picture fast. Renters whose payments are reported are 80% more likely to pay on time, and 79% saw their credit scores increase after rent reporting began (TransUnion, 2025), with gains that commonly land in the +40-point range. And it's positive-only: on-time payments help your file — there's no new penalty structure working against you.

Your rent can even help you buy a home

This is the part most renters don't know yet. A 2025 order from the Federal Housing Finance Agency lets Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac use VantageScore 4.0, and newer FICO models (like 10T) factor rental history — which means your on-time rent can now count toward qualifying for a mortgage. The thin credit file that keeps many renters from their first home is exactly what a reported rent history helps fill.

How it works with Atlasdair

Credit building is one of the six benefits in our Resident Benefits Package. Your on-time rent is reported to all three major bureaus, and we can back-report up to 24 months of history — so the payments you've already made start working for your score right away. Every leaseholder 18 or older is included, automatically.

You're already paying the rent. This is how it finally pays you back.
